Kush
Kush
Kush is a widely used term in cannabis terminology associated with cannabis genetics originating from the Hindu Kush mountain region of Central and South Asia. Over time, the name has also become a broader term used for numerous cannabis strains and genetic lines.
Kush in Cannabis Terminology
The name Kush originates from the Hindu Kush, a mountain range extending through parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Cannabis has a long history in this region, and plants associated with the area have contributed genetic material to many strains found in modern cannabis breeding.
Traditional Kush genetics are commonly associated with Indica-type cannabis. However, the word Kush is now used in the names of many different strains and hybrids, meaning a strain containing “Kush” in its name does not necessarily represent an unchanged genetic line from the Hindu Kush region.
One well-known example is OG, a term closely associated with OG Kush and the development of numerous modern cannabis strains. Kush genetics have similarly been crossed and selected over generations, creating a large family of related strain names.
Kush therefore does not refer to a cannabinoid, product type or particular form of Flower. In cannabis terminology, the word primarily refers to genetic heritage, strain naming and the historical connection to the Hindu Kush region.
