Industrial Hemp
Industrial Hemp
Industrial hemp is a term used for hemp cultivated primarily as a raw material for commercial and industrial purposes. It belongs to the cannabis plant family but is generally associated with varieties selected for characteristics such as fibre, seeds and biomass rather than resin-rich flowers.
Industrial Hemp in Cannabis Terminology
Industrial hemp is derived from Cannabis sativa and has been cultivated for centuries for its versatility as an agricultural crop. Depending on the variety and purpose, different parts of the plant can be used as raw materials for textiles, paper, construction materials and other manufactured products.
The term is closely related to hemp, but industrial hemp more specifically describes hemp grown and processed for agricultural or industrial applications. Plants cultivated for fibre, for example, may be selected for tall stems and substantial fibre production.
Industrial hemp should not be understood as a separate botanical species of cannabis. Instead, the designation generally reflects how particular hemp varieties are cultivated, classified and used. Legal definitions can also differ between countries and jurisdictions, particularly regarding permitted THC levels.
Industrial hemp can additionally be cultivated for its seeds. These can serve as the raw material for products such as Hemp Seed Oil, which differs from extracts obtained from the resin-rich flowers of the cannabis plant.
